This is a story about Roslyn Simmons. Roslyn loves Barney and playtime. She has Neurofibromatosis 1.
Roslyn Janae was born November 10, 1999. Roslyn had several cafe-au-lait spots when she born. When Roslyn was about 6 months, we noticed her eye was puffy on the left side of her face. She began to see an eye doctor. The eye doctor said her lid is swollen and drooping because of a tumor. The eye doctor tried two different things to help her eyelid lift.
First, he tried a patch on the right eye. This did not work because she would not keep the patch on her eye. Next, he tried some eye drops which did not help. The eye doctor referred us to an eye surgeon. The eye surgeon ordered a MRI on her head which found a small tumor growing on the left eye muscle. Roslyn had her first surgery on February 5, 2002. They removed most of the tumor, but could not get all of it because it was wrapped in her eye muscle. Eighteen months later the tumor grew back.
A different eye doctor ordered a MRI of her head. The doctor removed this tumor on October 1, 2003. We are closely evaluating her eye to watch for different changes. This is a tumor that comes back because the doctor could not get the root.
Roslyn has a speech delays. Jackson Public Schools (Jackson, Mississippi) tested Roslyn and the evaluation results showed she is developmentally delayed. She received a total test age equivalent of 20 months. Her highest area was in the motor skills (22 to 23
months). Cognitive area was 14 to 16 months. In the communication area, she is able to understand more than she able to express.
Receptive score is 23 to 25 months and expressive 11 to 15 months. In the academic area, the score was 17 month and 30 months in Self –Help skills.
Roslyn appears to be mentally challenged and will have to go through several tests in the next few months. We will keep you posted on her progress.
